Levisham Station may remind you of films or television series you have seen Amongst its many starring roles, it was the Melton Carbury of Brideshead Revisited, and featured in Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, All Creatures Great and SmalL Look at the slate roofs and overhanging eaves of the station buildings which are typical of those along the line Until the coming oF the railway the farmS and cottages of Newtondale were thatched or sometimes roofed with red clay pantiles made just south of Pickering Railway cottages and station buildings along the line were the first to use slate Its transport from North Wales or the Lake District was made possible by the railways
Levlsham village lies out of sight some 1½ miles (2.4km) south east of the station The distance, added to a climb of 300 feet (90m) from the valley floor, made the station somewhat inconvenient for the village But station staff would fend off angry travellers by saying that the station would look silly in the village if the railway line was in the valley!
