Starting at Grosmont at 08.45 with breakfast in the station tea room
one of our instructors will then take you on a safety briefing round the
Locomotive Depot. A cup of enginemans tea and a short talk in our Mutual
Improvements classroom on basic steam principles, controls, signalling and
footplate progression.
We have lunch, then at 12.50 you ride on the locomotive to Pickering and back. On return to Grosmont at 1 5.20 we visit the signal box then conclude the day with a de-brief over tea.
This introduction to the steam railway is available to any person between the ages of 16 and 70 years. Up to four persons can be accommodated per day.
Costs are:- £125 per person which includes a year's membership to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Old clothing made of cotton (not nylon) ideally overalls, should be worn along with stout footwear.
You enjoyed the taster and are now eager to try your hand at operating the engine. Under the guidance of qualified instructors your ambition can be realized. Read on for details of our one day sampler package.
We meet you at Grosmont station tea room at 08.45 for breakfast. Then a
short walk to the Locomotive Depot for a safety briefing.
After this and
under our supervision, you prepare the engine, oiling up, examining, checking
fuel and equipment, raising steam pressure, and once the engine is ready you
move it round the shed yard, familiarizing yourself with the controls and how
the engine responds.
Lunch is at 12.45 and afterwards you drive or fire the engine on two return journeys to Goathland, arriving back at the Locomotive shed at 15.50 where you dispose of the engine ready for its next turn of duty.
On completion we have a de-brief over a cup of enginemans tea.
The Sampler is open to all between the ages of 16-70 years.
The cost is £335 per person this includes meals and a years free
membership of the N.Y.M.R.
If these days out have sustained you but you are hungry for more, the we can offer you a two and a half day development course (a helping) or a full weeks (meal).
The latter course is part of our footplate training programme that
all of our cleaners attend in their line of promotion.
