Wartime Weekend
2005

NYMR

The Second World War seems long ago, something from the last century, it's true. After all, it ended 60 years ago - a lifetime it seems. But the War left an indelible mark. Those who survived recall a time of extreme emotion. They were young and life could be short. They were dangerous times so they lived it to the full.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway tries to recapture the spirit of that vanished age. Join us as we turn back the clock to 1943. See for yourself the heartache of separation; applaud morale-boosting comedy: face the air-raids; dance to the music of Glenn Miller.

We are proud to present our annual tribute to the men and women who kept Britain’s railways running throughout the Second World War. To remember them we recreate the sights and sounds of those dark days.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway welcomes you back to the Home Front in 1943. Once again we remember the railwaymen and women who gave their lives in the service of their country. A dangerous period for the railways and many scenes portrayed over the weekend will remind the older passengers of those dark wartime days however the programme is lightened by music throughout and this year is supplied by our guest singer Fiona Harrison plus the Paul Harper Company History of ENSA show. War 1
War 2 The weekend starts with the Flag raising ceremony at Pickering Station on Friday 14th at 12 noon and ends at dusk on Sunday 16th with the final lowering of the flag. Parades & Ceremonies -

Two major parades will take place, the traditional Pickering Military Parade 11am Saturday 15th and the new Grosmont Muster and Parade on Sunday 16th.

Are you driving to Pickering for our Wartime Weekend?
use the free PARK & RIDE

Why fight your way into the centre of town to try and find a parking space? An almost impossible task during this annual event! We suggest you make use of the Official Park & Ride on the Al69 (Malton Road). It’s just over a mile south of the town.

A regular bus service will transport you to the town centre, only a few minutes walk from Pickering Station. Please note: Pickering Station Car-Park will be closed during Wartime Weekend. There will also be restricted parking at both Goathland and Grosmont Stations (to allow parking of military and wartime civilian vehicles). See everything down the line - travel by train and help ease the parking strain.
